How to upgrade your flight
Cash Upgrades
You can upgrade your flight from economy by paying extra cash, either in advance or at the airport. If you’re on the fence about it, it’s usually a good idea to wait until check-in and ask the staff how much the upgrade costs (if available). This is because many airlines offer discounted upgrades at check-in that aren’t visible in advance.
Bid for an Upgrade
Many airlines now allow you to bid for an upgrade. Essentially, you set a price you're willing to pay, and if your bid is accepted, you'll pay the price you committed to and you’ll get the upgrade.
Award Upgrades
You can upgrade your flight using points/miles. It’s a good option to consider if you have a lot of spare points and don’t want to spend the extra cash.
When upgrading is worth it
Long-Haul Flights
Upgrading to a lie-flat business class seat can be worth it for long-haul flights. The amenities, extra legroom and enhanced service will keep you comfortable throughout your flight, allowing you to arrive at your destination well-rested.
Discounted Upgrade Costs
It goes without saying that if the upgrade costs are low and you want to have a more relaxing flight experience, upgrading your flight can be worth it.
When upgrading isn’t worth it
Small Aircraft
Most smaller aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, which are very commonly found on shorter flights don’t offer much of a luxurious experience in business class. Unless the upgrade is very cheap, I wouldn’t upgrading.
High Upgrade Costs
If the cost to upgrade your flight is as much as a regular business class ticket, there’s probably no point in upgrading.
This is especially true in the case of award upgrades, where it’s often only slightly cheaper to upgrade with points when compared to using the points to book a regular business class ticket.
Tips for Securing the Best Upgrades
Travel During Off-Peak Times
Flights are less likely to be fully booked during off-peak times, increasing your chances of finding available upgrades.
Use Upgrade Apps
Tools like ExpertFlyer can help you monitor upgrade availability and set alerts, so that you’re ready to jump on opportunities as soon as they arise.
Be Loyal to an Airline / Airline Alliance
Flying consistently with one airline allows you to earn higher status with them, giving you more opportunities to upgrade your flights.
