Have you ever booked a flight, only to find it cheaper the next day?

Finding the right time to book flights is hard.

Here are some tips to help you maximize your chances at booking the cheapest ticket:

When should I start looking for flights?

Most airlines make flights available for booking 11-12 months in advance. Prices typically start fluctuating around 6 months before you plan to fly.

I recommend that you start looking as far in advance as possible to get a general idea of the prices, and start monitoring the prices more frequently as you get closer to your planned departure date.

When should I book international flights?

For international flights booked with cash, the ideal time to book is anywhere between 4 months to 2 weeks in advance. I usually find the best deals around 1 month before flying, but I’ve found cheap deals as late as 2 weeks before flying. Waiting until the last minute doesn’t always work out and I recommend booking when you find a price you’re comfortable with.

When should I book domestic flights?

The best time to book domestic flights is highly dependent on the airline you’re flying, but 2 months to 2 weeks in advance is usually the best time to book cheap domestic flights. I’ve booked domestic flights a few days before flying without overpaying, although you’re more likely to find a cheaper deal if you book in advance.

Take advantage of discounts

Lots of airlines run sales throughout the year where you can save anywhere from 5-50% on flights. Scroll down to see some current promotions that you can take advantage of!

When should I book award flights?

Every airline releases award flights at a different time, usually 11-12 months before the departure date. As a general rule, the earlier you can book your flight the better, but this varies based on which loyalty program you book with, which airline and and which cabin class you plan to fly.
