If you want to save thousands on business and first class airfare, you need to start booking flights with airline miles, rather than cash.
The most common way to earn airline miles is by booking flights; however, this isn’t always practical and can take longer than you’d like.
Fortunately, most loyalty programs offer alternate ways to earn points that allow you to save up without needing to board an aircraft.
Here are the top strategies to earn airline miles without flying:
Use the Right Credit Cards
Applying for and using travel credit cards is one of the easiest ways to rack up miles quickly. Whether it’s a co-branded airline card or a flexible travel rewards card, using these for daily purchases can help you accumulate miles that you can later redeem for premium airfare. Look for cards with high sign-up bonuses and bonus rewards on categories like travel, dining, and groceries to maximize your value.
Use Airline Shopping Portals
Most major airlines have online shopping portals. When you shop through these platforms, you can earn miles for every dollar you spend at participating retailers. Keep an eye on special promotions where certain retailers offer double or triple miles during limited-time offers (Aeroplan is great for this).
Join Airline Dining Programs
Similar to shopping portals, many airlines have dining programs that allow you to earn miles by dining at eligible restaurants and cafes.
Stay at an Eligible Hotel
Many airlines partner with hotel chains, allowing you to earn miles for each night’s stay. The next time you need to book a hotel, check that they’re partnered with the airline of your choice and earn the extra points.
Rent a Car
Similar to how airlines partner with hotels, most major car rental companies have airline partners. Another easy way to boost your miles balance while on vacation.
Buy Miles
While buying miles isn’t always the most cost-effective option, it can be useful in certain situations - like when you’re just a few thousand miles away from the flight you want to book. Most major airline loyalty programs run promotions a few times a year where you can get anywhere from 10% to 100%+ bonus miles. If you plan to buy miles, it’s best to wait for a promotion.

Boeing Halts 777X Test Flights
Boeing has paused flight testing of its 777X aircraft after discovering a structural issue during a post-flight inspection. The problem was found in a part that connects the engine to the aircraft, and inspections of other test planes revealed similar issues. Originally expected to enter service in 2020, the aircraft is now scheduled for 2025, but this recent setback could delay it further.
