How to Book (Cheap) Last Minute Flights

It’s usually harder, but not impossible. Try these 5 things next time:

Look for Airlines Running Promotions

Many airlines (especially budget airlines) frequently run promotions. Check the website of each airline you’re considering to see if they have any active deals. If you fly with a specific airline often, sign up to their email list to get notified whenever they announce a sale. The earlier you book after a sale is announced, the more likely you are to get a good deal.

Use Frequent Flyer Points to Book Award Flights

Many airline loyalty programs use fixed award charts, meaning the number of points required for a seat remains fixed until it’s sold out (unlike cash fares which fluctuate constantly). Just keep in mind that fixed award availability is usually limited, especially close to the departure date.

Book One-Way Instead of a Round-Trip

While booking one-way flights won’t always save you money, it can offer way more flexibility than a round-trip, and even end up cheaper. With one-ways, you can mix and match airlines, and you have more control over the flexibility of your return flight. If round-trips are looking expensive, try searching for one-ways instead.

Check Nearby Airport Fares

Look at alternate airports you could fly from or to. When booking last minute, the price difference between nearby airports can be substantial, so it’s worth exploring your options.

Set Up Fare Alerts for Price Drops

Tools like Google Flights and Skyscanner allow you to set alerts and track price changes. If a better deal pops up, you’ll be notified immediately without having to monitor fares yourself. It’s a good idea to set fare alerts for all the flights you’re considering to avoid missing out on a good deal.

Lots of Companies are Interested in Portugal’s Flag Carrier

Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro confirmed that multiple companies, including Air France-KLM, Lufthansa, and IAG, are interested in investing in TAP SA as the government prepares for its privatization. TAP’s strong connections to Brazil, Africa, and North America make it an attractive acquisition target for these major airlines.
