✈️ Why Mistake Fares Exist

Mistake fares typically appear due to:

  • Human Error: Simple typos or data entry mistakes.

  • Currency Conversion Errors: Miscalculations during currency conversion.

  • Glitches: Technical issues during fare updates.

Mistake fares aren’t common; however, they aren’t exactly impossible to find either.

💳 How to Find Mistake Fares

Although airlines have numerous measures in place to avoid publishing mistake fares, it’s not impossible to find them.

The easiest way is to sign up for a service that finds them for you. Here are a few:

If you’d rather search for mistake fares yourself, use the explore map offered by your OTA (online travel agency) of choice. Google Flights and Skyscanner are reliable choices and have explore maps that allow you to visualize flight prices from your departure city to any destination. Keep an eye out for flights that look suspiciously cheap. If you manage to find one, chances are that it’s a mistake fare.

Searching for mistake fares manually takes a lot of time, because there’s no guarantee that you’ll even find one. If you do find one, book it as soon as possible, since airlines are notorious for shutting down mistake fares quickly.

Let’s say you managed to book a mistake fare. There’s no guarantee that the airline will honour the fare, and they could choose to cancel your ticket instead. There have been many instances where airlines ended up honouring mistake fares, and plenty of others where they didn’t.

Example of an airline honouring a mistake fare

If you book a mistake fare and you’ve started planning your trip, make sure the rest of your bookings (i.e: your hotel) are refundable. It’s recommended to delay planning the rest of your trip as much as possible, just in case your flight ticket gets cancelled.
