Deciding whether to book a round-trip flight ticket instead of two one-way tickets is a dilemma every traveller has experienced before.
For example, let's say you're travelling from Toronto (YYZ) to New York (JFK). You have two options:
You can book one round-trip ticket from YYZ to JFK, which includes your flight back to Toronto.
You can book one ticket from YYZ to JFK, and a second one from JFK to YYZ (for your return flight).
As a general rule, it’s usually cheaper to book a round-trip ticket compared to booking two one-way tickets.
However, this isn't always true, and there are some cases where it could be cheaper to book one-way tickets instead.
When booking domestic flights, you can usually book two one-way tickets for the same price as one round-trip ticket.
When booking international flights on the other hand, it’s usually cheaper to book a round-trip ticket, when compared to the price of two one-way tickets.
It's worth noting that this isn't always the case. You should always compare the price of a round-trip ticket to the price of two one-way tickets before booking, to ensure that you're getting the most value.
If cheaper (or the same price), I always prefer booking two one-way tickets separately, rather than one round-trip ticket.
This is because, booking one-way tickets separately gives you more flexibility over your travel and allows you to be more creative with your itinerary. It also allows you to pair different airlines and layovers together, giving you more control over your travel plans.
In summary, whether round-trips are cheaper than one-ways depends. You should always compare the price of a round-trip to the price of two one-way tickets to make sure you’re not overpaying for your flights.
